The stakeholders and interested parties that participated in elaborating this National Strategy for Environmental Sustainability (NSES) identified four critical environmental issues that require interventions in the short and medium term. These four issues are: a) water, b) land resources, c) biological diversity and coastal and marine environment,1 and d) waste management. This NSES and the measures that come with it attempt to link the effect of environmental degradation on poverty, seek to investigate means to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
